Long Beach, CA - To commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the City of Long Beach will observe a citywide moment of silence on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024. Hosted by Mayor Rex Richardson and the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments, the memorial ceremony will serve as a citywide opportunity to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day.

"Our country was shaken by the tragedy on September 11, 2001, and we should never forget the impact it has had on all of us," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "But it is also a day that reminds us of our unity and perseverance. We invite our community to join us in honoring those whose lives were tragically taken and our heroes who went above and beyond."

Join City leaders as they honor and remember those who were lost with a Last Alarm tribute at 9:11 a.m., followed by a ceremonial wreath placement, words of reflection by Mayor Rex Richardson, a moment of silence, and a bagpiper performance of "Amazing Grace."

"Each year, it is important to take time to reflect and remember those we lost on September 11," said Police Chief Wally Hebeish. "The selfless actions of the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten."

"Let us never forget the unimaginable tragedy of September 11 and the ultimate sacrifice of so many," said Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan. "Let us never forget their legacy, and let it inspire us every day to protect and serve with unwavering commitment."

The City warmly asks members of the community to take a moment for a quiet, personal reflection during this time to honor the memory of those who were killed and the bravery of the first responders in New York, Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia on Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony will begin at approximately 9:05 a.m. and residents are invited to watch it via livestream on the following City pages:

All City facilities will fly the American flag at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in remembrance and as a mark of respect for the first responders and civilians who died during the terrorist attack.
