WORKING VISIT BY THE

PARLIAMENTARY VICE-MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF JAPAN

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Masahiro Komura undertook a working visit to Malaysia from 22 to 23 September 2024 as part of his tour of Southeast Asia. This was Parliamentary Vice-Minister Komura's first visit to Malaysia since his appointment in September 2023.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Komura had a bilateral meeting and was hosted to a working luncheon by Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin on 23 September 2024. Both sides underscored their shared commitment to advancing the mutually beneficial Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Malaysia and Japan. They also discussed increasing trade and investment cooperation, as well as strengthening the existing partnership in defence, tourism, higher education, and green energy. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Relations and the war in Gaza.

While in Malaysia, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Komura also visited the branch campus of University of Tsukuba, Malaysia, which was officiated by Minister of Higher Education Dato' Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir on 2 September 2024. For the inaugural enrolment, a total of 13 students have applied to further their studies in the Bachelor of Arts and Science Programme under the School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design.

Japan has been Malaysia's fourth largest trading partner for nine consecutive years. In 2023, total trade between Malaysia and Japan was valued at RM156.64 billion (USD34.39 billion).

As of 2023, a total of 2,810 projects by Japanese companies have been implemented in Malaysia, with total investments worth RM102.11 billion (USD29.67 billion), creating 344,120 job opportunities.
