Board to Consider Several Ordinance Revisions

The Walker County Board of Commissioners will consider several revisions to the County Code of Ordinances before the end of the year. Many of the proposed changes have been in the works for several months. The amendments to be considered address a number of concerns, across three codes: Alcohol, Animals and Land Development.

Chapter 4 - Alcoholic Beverages:

  • Reduce the number of retail package stores selling distilled spirits from five per County Commission District to three.
  • Increase the distance between two retail package stores selling distilled spirits from 1,500 feet to 15,840 feet.
  • Clarify language for tasting events to require they be held indoors

Chapter 6 - Animals

  • Require cat and dog owners to spay/neuter and microchip their pets

Chapter 22 - Land Development

  • Create a special use permit regulating Solar Energy Systems
  • Establish minimum acreage and buffer requirements for poultry house operations
  • Clarify the allowable use of non-traditional overnight accommodations, such as yurts and treehouses, and where they are permitted.

A public hearing on the Land Development ordinance amendments will be held as part of the Planning Commission meeting on October 17, 2024. The Planning Commission meets at 6:00 p.m. at the Walker County Civic Center, 10052 Hwy 27 in Rock Spring.

Public hearings on all three ordinance amendments will be held as part of the Board of Commissioners meeting on October 24, 2024. The Board meets at 6:30 p.m. at Courthouse Annex III, 201 S Main Street in LaFayette.
