Improving soybean yield through good seed and varieties: Insights from Radio IITA Farmers Outreach

The recent Radio IITA Farmers Outreach, held in collaboration with the IITA Soybean Breeding Unit, focused on the critical factors influencing soybean yield, providing farmers with practical knowledge and tools to improve their crop production. Held at the IITA headquarters, the outreach brought together local farmers, IITA scientists, and research associates, all committed to enhancing soybean farming practices in the region.

IITA Soybean Breeder Abush Abebe spoke extensively about the major factors contributing to a good soybean yield. "The foundation of a successful soybean crop lies in the quality of the seed," he emphasized. "By selecting the right varieties and ensuring that seeds are viable through germination tests, farmers can significantly improve their yields. Good seed quality is non-negotiable if we want positive results in our soybean production."

Participants engaged in a practical session where they were taught how to conduct germination tests and properly select seeds. The community seed production concept was also highlighted to ensure high-quality seeds are readily available within local farming communities. "Community seed production not only ensures that farmers have access to good seeds, but it also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among farmers to maintain seed quality," Abebe added.

Radio IITA Lead Dajie Odok also addressed the significance of the outreach. "Our goal with these outreach programs is to bridge the gap between research and the farmers who can benefit from it. By directly bringing practical, research-based knowledge to the farmers, we empower them to make informed decisions that will improve their livelihoods. This outreach is a testament to IITA's commitment to agricultural development and food security."

The participants appreciated the training and shared how the new knowledge would impact their farming practices. "Before this training, I didn't realize how much the seed quality could affect my yield," said Salami Ayoola, a local farmer from Ibudo Alafia, Iwajowa Local Government, Oyo State. "Now, I know how to test my seeds and ensure they are strong before planting."

Another participant, Adams Azeez, noted: "The session on community seed production was an eye-opener. We can implement it in our community to ensure everyone can access good seeds, ultimately benefiting us all."

"I learned so much about seed selection today," added Aisha. "This knowledge will help me choose the best seeds for my farm, which I believe will lead to better harvests."

Salau Ahmed from Kajola Local Government Area of Oyo State shared his excitement about applying the new techniques. "This training has given me the confidence to improve my farming methods. I am eager to return to my farm to implement what I've learned."

The Radio IITA Farmers Outreach continues to play a vital role in disseminating agricultural knowledge and improving farming practices across Africa. With the insights gained from this event, local farmers are better equipped to boost their soybean yields, share knowledge with other farmers, and contribute to the region's agricultural development.
