West to East Coast: Grand Lake Timber welcomes new plant manager Scott Davis

Scott Davis, Plant Manager at Grand Lake Timber in Chipman, NB, is a new face to the mill and to the east coast of Canada who brings a wealth of experience to the home team.

Though he's new to J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI), Davis is no stranger to forestry operations. He's worked for nearly a decade for forest products companies, including Weyerhaeuser in Princeton, BC, and Canfor in Grande Prairie, Alta. As a Plant Manager, he'll use his experience to help optimize and maximize mill productivity, provide direction and focus to the team and champion JDI's responsibilities of forest stewardship and leadership in safety.

He took over as Plant Manager recently.

"Joining JDI was a great opportunity to further my career," Davis said. "It's a great team with many future opportunities available in such a diverse business. The high level of vertical integration for the company means a lot for career stability and long-term success."

Davis is looking forward to exploring the Chipman area and the east coast. He credits the Maritimes for its affordability and friendly and helpful people.

"It's a beautiful area to live in and it's close to the ocean. My wife, kids and dogs are very happy here," he said.

A move across the country can be a daunting experience, but Davis takes challenges in stride. Before his forestry career started, he owned his own business for several years. The business closure led to his restarting in a new city with an entry-level sawmill role.

"It was the best thing that could have ever happened to me," said Davis. "The uncomfortable parts and sometimes failures end up bringing the most growth and personal development."

Davis said he would encourage anyone who is looking to make a career change to "just do it."

"Pursue what interests you, because if you don't, someone else will do it instead."
