Terra State Community College is proud to announce that Professor Steven Bender has been formally recommended for Emeritus Status in recognition of his extraordinary service and lasting contributions to the institution. Professor Bender will retire in January 2025, culminating a remarkable career at Terra State that began in 1999.

The honorary Emeritus Title is reserved for individuals who have provided outstanding service to Terra State Community College, serving continuously for at least 15 years, with at least 10 years in a full-time capacity. The nomination was submitted by full-time faculty member and current Terra Faculty Association (TFA) President, Amy Drongowski, who highlighted Professor Bender's pivotal role in advancing the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) program. His impact on the growth and reputation of this program has left an indelible mark on the college and its students.

"Steven's selfless dedication to his students and his colleagues is recognized with the highest level of respect," said Drongowski. "He has been a mentor to faculty and an inspiring leader, making a lasting difference both inside and outside the classroom."

An alumnus of Terra Technical College, Professor Bender's Terra State journey began as an adjunct instructor, later transitioning to roles including contract trainer, full-time professor, and eventually TFA President. His tenure is distinguished by a deep commitment to his students, innovative leadership, and unwavering advocacy for faculty. Under his guidance, the HVACR Lab has become a state-of-the-art facility, widely regarded as a premier training center in the region.

Dr. Doug Mead, Vice President of Academic Affairs, commended Professor Bender's legacy: "Steve epitomizes what we look for in a faculty member: extraordinary discipline and expertise, instructional excellence, and fierce advocacy for students and colleagues. His visionary leadership has created a one-of-a-kind training center that will impact students for generations."

Terra State President Dr. Ron Schumacher also expressed his gratitude for Professor Bender's contributions: "Steve's motivation, first and foremost, has always been his students. His dedication to advising and supporting them throughout their academic journey is unparalleled. While we haven't always agreed during his time as TFA President, I have the utmost respect for his leadership and advocacy. He will be greatly missed."

Professor Bender's influence extends far beyond the classroom, as evidenced by the overwhelming support of his colleagues and the program's alumni. His passion for education, mentorship, and innovation has profoundly shaped Terra State Community College, leaving a legacy that will endure well into the future.

At the November 20, 2024, meeting, the Terra State Board of Trustees approved the recommendation for Professor Bender's Emeritus Status, honoring a career that has defined excellence in education, leadership, and service.
