SACRAMENTO- Assemblymember Dr. Corey A. Jackson (D-Moreno Valley) is proud to announce the signing of Assembly Bill 518 by Governor Gavin Newsom. This legislation addresses California's growing food insecurity crisis by improving access to CalFresh benefits and ensuring more equitable distribution of essential resources to low-income and underserved communities.

AB 518 establishes a process to increase participation in CalFresh, California's largest food assistance program, by removing barriers and identifying eligible individuals who are not currently enrolled. With over 20% of Californians experiencing food insecurity, this bill is a critical step towards fulfilling California's commitment to recognizing food as a basic human right.

"This bill is about ensuring every Californian, no matter their background, has access to nutritious food," said Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson. "Food insecurity is deeply tied to health, educational outcomes, and economic stability. AB 518 will help bridge the gap, giving families and individuals the resources they need to thrive. This is not just a fight against hunger-it's a fight for dignity, equity, and a better future for all."

By creating a framework for data sharing between public entities and enhancing outreach strategies, AB 518 will improve the administration of CalFresh, helping more eligible Californians access the benefits they deserve. This includes targeted outreach to communities of color, rural areas, and other populations disproportionately impacted by food insecurity.

Assemblymember Jackson expressed gratitude for the support of his colleagues and collaboration with stakeholders in bringing this essential legislation to fruition. "This is a victory for families across California, and I am committed to continuing the work to ensure that food insecurity becomes a thing of the past."
