Save the Date: Learn Readiness Tips at the 20th Annual Disaster Preparedness Day, Saturday, August 3

July 24, 2024

Redwood City - How prepared are you?

We all know we live on the sharp edge of a continent and that we should do something to be ready if something bad happens. Bad like earthquakes, floods, wildfires and terrorism bad.

So what does ready look like? Find out on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the County's 20th annual Disaster Preparedness Day, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Mateo County Event Center. Admission is free.

This family-friendly event (the emphasis is on readiness, not scare tactics) includes demonstrations on preparing emergency meals without power, how to prepare an emergency kit, create a communications plan (if cell service goes down, how do you and your family get in touch?) and more.

In addition to free admission, this year's event offers free parking and free hotdogs, along with opportunities to receive giveaways like an emergency radio or emergency meal pack. Classes and workshops are scheduled throughout the event, with many held in Spanish and Mandarin as well as English; check the schedule to learn locations and times.

Firefighters will demonstrate how to use a fire extinguisher, medical personnel will teach Stop-the-Bleed and hands-only CPR and private firms will display safety items for the home and commute.

There will be a Kids' Korner, featuring "Storytime with a Firefighter."

The Red Cross will also offer Prepare with Pedro, an education program for grades K-2 that teaches students how to be prepared and take action for either home fires or a local hazard.

While admission and all of the classes are free, Attendees, however, are encouraged to reserve a spot in a class.
