Uniontown, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania DUI Association, and law enforcement agencies across western Pennsylvania will team up this weekend to kick off the Halloween Impaired Driving Campaign, running from October 11 through October 31.

The enforcement initiative, named "Operation Ghoul Busters," was formally announced today during a media event at the Washington Township Police Department in Westmoreland County.

"As Halloween approaches, we urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. Impaired driving puts lives at risk, and enforcement activities are ramping up to keep our roads safe," said Pennsylvania DUI Association Regional DUI Program Administrator Cathy Tress. "Let's ensure this holiday is filled with fun, not tragedy."

The coordinated enforcement activities, which will take place between Friday, October 11, 2024, and Sunday, October 13, 2024, will include roving DUI patrols. Local and state law enforcement agencies will also conduct sustained enforcement activities across the commonwealth throughout the entire Halloween Impaired Driving Campaign to deter drivers from getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In the southwest region, 10 Police Traffic Service projects will be participating, including Armstrong County, Baldwin Borough, Mt. Lebanon, Moon Township, Plum Borough, West Deer Township, Beaver County, Butler County, Washington County, and Washington Township. A full list of participating law enforcement agencies can be found here.

The enforcement is part of PennDOT and its safety partners' continued efforts to reduce the number of impaired driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities statewide.

A multi-faceted approach is used to help keep Pennsylvania's roadways safe including educating the public on the state's vehicle code, DUI laws and the dangers and consequences of impaired driving.

The operation is funded in part by PennDOT's statewide distribution of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
