Think Science live event: Let’s talk about addiction

Texas Public Radio will partner with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) to serve the community at the next Think Science live Q & A.

The event features presentations by experts from UT Health Science Center San Antonio on the latest evidence-based treatments in substance use disorder and will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions of researchers to learn more about person-centered, interprofessional and comprehensive care, and gather a greater understanding of substance abuse. Think Science will be at 7 p.m. July 15 at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio Long Campus, 7703 Floyd Curl Dr. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Click here to register.

Topics will include:

  • What is meant by the term substance use disorders?
  • How are San Antonio and South Texas impacted by substance use disorders? Local stats.
  • How is this different or similar to other communities nationwide?
  • What is the science behind substance use disorders? Addiction?
  • What are we doing through the Be Well Institute to impact substance use disorders?

Jennifer Sharpe Potter, PhD, MPH, vice president for research, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, will lead the discussion and will introduce the Be Well Institute on Substance Use and Related Disorders. The institute includes the Be Well, Texas initiative of UT Health Science Center San Antonio, which is revolutionizing how substance use disorder is treated in Texas by providing outpatient and virtual services, making them accessible to more people in every corner of the state. Potter is the executive director of Be Well, Texas.

Jennifer Sharpe Potter, PhD, MPH, vice president for research at UT Health Science Center San Antonio and founding director of the Be Well Institute on Substance Use and Related Disorders, an initiative dedicated to advancing addiction research, education and evidence-based treatments.

Brett Ginsburg, PhD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, whose research focuses on the behavioral neurobiology and pharmacology of alcohol, opioids and cannabinoids.

Van King, MD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science and medical director of Be Well, Texas, whose research is related to patients with severe substance use disorder and how best to manage these chronic conditions.
