City of Burleson Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus for 2024 Season

On August 9, 2024, the City of Burleson was notified of the first human case of West Nile Virus infection within the city limits for this season. The patient is a resident of Zone 10, an area bounded by Alsbury Boulevard, Renfro Street, McAlister Road, and Peach Lane. This week, Zone 10 also recorded its first positive mosquito trap result of the season. As a result, the area will be sprayed on two nights between Friday, August 9, and Tuesday, August 13.

Although it is unclear whether the patient contracted the virus at home or elsewhere, the city is taking proactive measures by deploying additional surveillance traps in the affected area. To date, approximately 22 human cases have been reported in Tarrant County this season.

For medical confidentiality and privacy reasons, no further identifying information will be provided.

"Our mosquito surveillance program and abatement teams are taking the necessary actions to ensure the safety of our residents. However, it is crucial for everyone to take the appropriate precautions," said Errick Thompson, Director of Public Works.

The best way to avoid exposure to West Nile Virus is by preventing mosquito bites. Residents are encouraged to follow the "4 Ds" to reduce their risk:

• DEET All Day, Every Day: Whenever outdoors, use insect repellents containing DEET or other EPA-approved ingredients, and follow the instructions.

• Dress: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing when outside.

• Drain: Eliminate or treat standing water in and around your home or workplace.

• Dusk & Dawn: Limit outdoor activities during these times when mosquitoes are most active.
