Need to see a dentist? Here's where students, employees can go on campus

About a decade ago, when I was a student at Marquette, a dog ate my retainer.

It happened on a weekend visit to a friend's house in Indiana. When I got back to Milwaukee, I scrambled to find an orthodontist who could quickly mold a new retainer before my teeth shifted. I found a dentist office about 20 minutes from campus.

I didn't know it at the time, but there were resources on campus for me at Marquette University School of Dentistry that would have saved me time and money. Marquette students and employees - as well as the general public - have access to professional dental care in the Faculty Practice clinic.

"We try to take care of our own here at Marquette," says Molly McCowan, manager of the Faculty Practice. "There's no point in sending employees or students off campus or not making it as convenient for them if it's something we're able to help with."

The Faculty Practice has dentists across every specialty: orthodontics, endodontics, oral pathology, periodontics, pediatrics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, radiology, temporomandibular disorders and general dentistry. Those practitioners, who spend most of their time teaching in the school's clinics, devote one day per week to the Faculty Practice.

"We're just like a private office," McCowan says. "We're different in that we have 25 of the best specialists from around the world under one roof."

Those specialists offer significant cost savings for employees and students, too. Students who visit the clinic receive a 10% discount; employees on Marquette's insurance plan have their deductibles waived, procedures covered between 80%-90% and preventative visits 100% covered. In addition, the Faculty Practice offers a referral credit program and payment plans.

"Dental care can get a little bit expensive, so we try to help alleviate that a bit," McCowan says.

Marquette employees can explore their dental insurance benefits here. Prospective patients should call 414-288-0788 to schedule a new patient appointment.

The Faculty Practice is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
