Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission,

Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council,

Excellencies,

This is a very rich exchange and we commend the closer and more institutionalized collaboration between the African Union Peace and Security Council and the PBC. We are also pleased that the African Union now participates in the PBC meetings on a regular basis just like the European Union.

This partnership between the AU PSC and the PBC is proof that the Secretary General's New Agenda for Peace and the Pact for the Future, that we have just adopted, are already being implemented.

Let me highlight two priority areas that are examples of this:

1. First, the New Agenda for Peace envisages a closer and more hands-on partnership between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations. We are pleased to see that the Pact for the Future endorses this approach, stressing the role of regional organizations in conflict prevention, mediation and dispute settlement as well as in peace support operations. The adoption of Security Council resolution 2719 last year is proof that there is political will to go in this direction.

2. Second, there is momentum for the conflict prevention agenda. Two Security Council Open Debates on conflict prevention, a number of PBC meetings focusing on national prevention strategies and the Pact for the Future - all in 2024 - provide a good basis to strengthen prevention in the Peacebuilding Architecture as we go into the review in 2025. We are pleased to see that support to peacebuilding- and national prevention plans is already a joint priority for the PBC and the AU-PSC.

As a final point, I want to recall the high-level UN-EU-AU trilateral meeting, which took place in the margins of UNGA this year, as part of the regular trilateral exchange. Peacebuilding is an area that is very ripe for discussions in trilateral format, given the high level of engagement on both the AU and the EU side. I am convinced that the two regional organizations (AU and EU), in partnership with the UN, can play a catalytic role in implementing the New Agenda for Peace and the Pact for the Future.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the UN and the African Union to push the peacebuilding agenda forward aiming at an ambitious Peacebuilding Architecture Review in 2025.

Thank you
