The UMass Wind Ensemble and UMass Symphony Band will each perform on the Amherst Common from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, September 29, as part of the fourth annual Bandtoberfest. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Amherst Downtown Business Improvement District (BID).

The family-friendly event brings hundreds of concertgoers to the Common to celebrate the coming of fall. This year's event will take place from 2 - 5 p.m. and will feature performances of music from movie soundtracks such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones, musicals including Mary Poppins, West Side Story and Sound of Music, plus marches, polkas, and classic band works by the two ensembles. Matthew Westgate will conduct the Wind Ensemble, and Lindsay Bronnenkant will conduct the Symphony Band.

The Abandoned Building Brewery will be on hand this year serving wine and freshly brewed beer, and audience members are invited to bring a picnic either from home or from one of the local eateries and cafes, along with a blanket or chair.

"This annual event is something we look forward to every year," says Westgate, who is also chair of the Department of Music and Dance. "We love partnering with the BID to bring the community together to celebrate great music and the most beautiful time of the year in Amherst. We hope people of all ages will come to the Common to enjoy our student performers and support local restaurants and this year's vendors."
