The Cowra Prisoner of War 80th Breakout Anniversary Commemorations

Published on 01 August 2024

The Cowra Breakout 80th Anniversary will be commemorated this Sunday and Monday, August 4th and 5th. This significant historical event underlines Cowra's resilience and its pivotal role in shaping Australia's wartime history and collective memory. "Cowra holds a unique place in history, and the tragic events of August 5th 1944 have profoundly impacted our small regional town in New South Wales," said Mayor Fagan.

The Commemorations Committee has dedicated considerable time and effort to organise two days of engaging, community-focused events. Highlights include heritage train rides, a Peace Bell ceremony, a torch run, a lantern parade, a special 1.30am event at the POW campsite, wreath layings, and free entry to the Japanese Garden on the 5th of August, among many other activities. For a complete event schedule, please follow the Council's social media channels.

These events are open to the community and visitors of all ages. We are also excited to welcome numerous international and special guests to Cowra including Her Excellency Margaret Beazley Governor of NSW to celebrate our relationship with Japan. Mayor Ruth Fagan eagerly anticipates hosting a large contingent of Japanese visitors, including friends and new delegations from other cities.

Please be aware that there will be road closures and special events on Sunday and Monday. Updates will be provided on the Council's social media and can be found in this week's Guardian on the Council noticeboard.
