Michael Lawing has been promoted to the position of Judicial District Manager (JDM) in Judicial District 24, effective December 2.
In his new position, Lawing will oversee Community Supervision operations in five counties in Western North Carolina - Avery, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga and Yancey.
"Michael Lawing has demonstrated his dedication and commitment to maintaining community safety and changing lives for the better," said Todd Ishee, secretary for the Department of Adult Correction. "His skills, training and leadership are great assets to the department."
"I am very pleased to promote Micheal Lawing," said Tracy K. Lee, deputy secretary for Community Supervision. "He has excelled at his job and I know he will step up to this new challenge with enthusiasm and vigor."
Lawing began his career with Community Supervision in 1999 as a probation/parole officer in Mecklenburg County. In 2002, he transferred to Buncombe County where he has supervised multiple specialized caseloads including domestic violence offenders and offenders ordered to electronic house arrest. He began specializing in the supervision of registered sex offenders in 2013. Michael was promoted to Chief Probation/Parole Officer in 2019 and currently supervises a unit that handles all registered sex offenders.
He has also served as a member of the Division 4 Emergency Response Team and Motivation Interviewing Sustainability Team. Most recently, he assisted with a small team that developed and implemented a training class for officers that are new to supervising registered sex offenders.
A native of Denver, North Carolina, Lawing is graduate of Western Carolina University where he earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, and a master's of public affairs.
