DEC Announces Changes to Upcoming Pheasant Hunting Season on John White WMA

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced John White Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in the town of Alabama, Genesee County, will be closed to pheasant hunting and dog training on Tuesdays and Fridays during the pheasant hunting season. The John White WMA's 2024 pheasant hunting season opens Oct. 19 and closes Dec. 31.

The change is consistent with regulations already in place at Tonawanda and Oak Orchard WMAs. This change allows for pheasant stocking to take place on the WMAs and is intended to improve hunt quality and the hunting experience.

The change will remain in effect on the properties for future pheasant hunting seasons going forward.

Pheasant hunting in New York has a long history and is highly valued by hunters throughout the state. DEC developed a new HuntFishNY registration page for mentored hunting and fishing opportunities. Hunters interested in attending a mentored pheasant hunt can find opportunities in their area and register directly through the website for sponsored hunts.
