The Femino family legacy at New Jersey Institute of Technology started with a child's admiration for his engineer uncle.
Growing up, Dr. Frank Femino '85 looked forward to visits from his uncle, Peter Garippa '51. Not only did Femino go on to become a Highlander himself - all three of his sons did as well.
"He was my inspiration to study mechanical engineering and go to NJIT, and then it inspired my three sons to go. It really is a legacy of NJIT for us," said Femino, an orthopedic surgeon who practices in Nutley, N.J.
Career at GE
After graduating with honors, Garippa - a first generation college student - was recruited by General Electric. "He specialized in illumination. He worked on all kinds of lighting projects," Femino said. "When I was a young boy growing up, he would always come back with toys from the Middle East or from South America. He took engineering trips all over the world … that left an impression on me."
Encouraged by Garippa, Femino studied mechanical engineering at NJIT. He went on to attend what is now New Jersey Medical School.
Femino's son Frank studied mechanical engineering and graduated in 2023. Garippa was at his graduation.
Grateful relatives
"He was with the boys every step of the way," said Femino. "They all love math and science and love to build and design things … We encouraged them to do the most rigorous undergraduate program there is. It will mold you for the rest of your life," Femino said.
Mark, who studied civil engineering, graduated in 2021.
When Garippa died in late 2023, Femino said the family found his class ring while going through his estate. Femino's youngest son, Luke, who also studied mechanical engineering and graduated in May, wore the ring at commencement in honor of Garippa.
"NJIT is for anyone who wants a great education. It opens all the doors for you with your career," said Femino. "I am truly joyous. It was the perfect fit for me and my boys."
