City of Akron Encourages Residents to Fill out Damage Report from Flooding

Deadline extended to August 21, 2024

Akron, Ohio, August 13, 2024 - Today, Summit County Emergency Management Agency announced that the Ohio EMA has extended the deadline for submittal of resident and business damages from the flooding which occurred in our community on August 8. The original deadline of August 14 has been extended to August 21. Verified damage reports will be sent to Ohio EMA to determine if any supplemental financial assistance will be provided to communities and/or residents.

Those who experienced damage to a residence or business can file a report in two ways:

The damage assessment process may not result in or guarantee supplemental financial assistance for any resident, business, or local jurisdiction.

"I'm grateful to the Ohio EMA for extending the deadline for reports," said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. "As our residents and business owners continue to grapple with the aftereffects of this intense storm event, having additional time to file a report of damage will be extremely helpful to them. We continue to support our community in our response and hope to spread the word about this potential assistance opportunity."

Additionally, Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise CPA, CFE has announced that real estate tax relief will be available to residents who have sustained damage to their property in the wake of the recent storm. Form DTE 26 can be downloaded from the Fiscal Office website. Visit http://FiscalOffice.summitoh.net and click on the link titled "Damaged Property" listed in the "Real Estate and Appraisal" column. Mail the completed form to the Fiscal Office at 175 S. Main Street, Room 304, Akron, OH 44308. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call 330-643-2704 to request a form in the mail. The filing deadline is Dec. 31, 2024.

The City of Akron has identified at least 60 homes in need of sanitization after experiencing a sewer backup in their basement during the storm event. The city is working with a contractor to schedule cleaning and sanitizing of those impacted residences. Any resident who believes they may have experienced a sewer backup and needs assistance cleaning can contact 3-1-1. Residents can also request gloves and sanitizer if they'd prefer to handle the cleaning themselves. Over the weekend, city sanitation crews were hard at work in the impacted neighborhoods helping to collect extra bulk items which were ruined during the storm. Crews continue to work in the most heavily affected areas. Residents who did not have items damaged by the flooding are reminded they can always call 3-1-1 to schedule one of their three free bulk pick-ups per year.
