Frostburg State University's Dining Services recently hosted an "Iron Chef" teaching kitchen competition for student organizations. FSU's Student Government Association (SGA) competed against Phi Mu Delta (PMD) in round one, with SGA winning by a narrow margin of 41 points to 37 points. Both teams will advance to the next round which will take place next month.

Each team was assigned a workstation stocked with the necessary cooking equipment and pantry staples. The competition was broken up into a planning phase, a shopping phase and a cooking/plating phase. Teams had 40 minutes to create their dishes and five minutes to plate them before the judging phase.

Scoring was based on the World Food Championships, allowing teams to earn points for execution, appearance and taste. Round one's judges included James DeCarlo, resident dining chef manager; Gabriel Washington, lecturer and food enthusiast; and Dr. Artie Travis, FSU vice president for Student Affairs.

Team SGA consisted of Rachael Michalski, Hailey Unger, Hayden Crowe and Zachary Johnson. Team PMD included Nick Mullens, Parker Hartge and Jorge Sanchez-Alvarez. Four new teams will compete in round two on Nov. 20. The top two teams from round two, in addition to Teams SGA and PMD will advance to the finals Dec. 10.
