Top 25 for student experience in the Good University Guide

The University of Essex is ranked in the top 25 for student experience and has risen 10 places to 46th in the overall rankings in the Good University Guide published by The Times and Sunday Times.

The Good University Guide also reveals the University is highly ranked for social inclusion - coming 29th out of all universities in England and Wales.

This latest rankings come in the same month that the University of Essex also rose to 23rd in the overall rankings in the Guardian University Guide.

Essex is ranked highly for a number of subjects. Those ranked in the UK top 30 and top 50% are:

  • Drama, dance and cinematics - 9th
  • Social work - 12th
  • Philosophy - 16th
  • Hospitality, leisure, recreation and tourism - 17th
  • Communications and media studies - 26th
  • Criminology - 26th
  • Electrical and electronic engineering - 28th
  • Sociology - 30th

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Kellard said: "We're pleased to see these rankings reflect strong performances in key measures based on feedback from our students such as student experience and teaching quality.

"We strive to offer students a really immersive campus experience where they can meet the world in one place and get involved in a whole range of extra-curricular activities, sports and clubs. The diversity and inclusivity of our community is also highlighted by our high ranking for social inclusion.

"This month we've seen our strongest ranking in the Guardian University Guide, an impressive rise in the Good University Guide and the Government's Knowledge Exchange Framework underline our positive impact on the economy and society through our research and education. This is a testament to lots of hard work within the University and Students' Union and we're looking forward to an exciting year ahead as we prepare for the new term."

Last year's SU President Kieran Phillips told the Guide: "The experience at Essex is one like no other - a real home away from home. From making crafts while making friends at SU Makes to experiencing hundreds of different cultures through community events, or partying the night away in our on-campus nightclub, there really is something for every type of personality.
