Become a Reading Tutor Volunteer through AARP Foundation Experience Corps

AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a community-based volunteer program that empowers people over 50 to serve as tutors to help students become better readers by the end of third grade. It is a proven "triple win," helping students succeed, older adults thrive, and communities grow stronger.

Our program ensures volunteer success through extensive training, peer networks, and ongoing evaluation. Experience Corps employs a structured, evidence-based model that improves students' overall reading ability by building their fluency, accuracy, and comprehension skills.

The Pinal County division- ACHIEVE Pinal Experience Corps - is currently in 9 districts, helping elementary students across Pinal County, AZ.

About the Program: Our reading tutor program pairs volunteers with students who need extra support in developing their reading abilities. This program is designed to foster a love of reading and boost the confidence of our young learners.

Your Role as a Volunteer: As a reading tutor, you will:

• Work one-on-one with up to 4 students; 30 minutes each, 2 days a week
• Provide structured reading tutoring sessions
• Encourage and support students in developing their reading skills

Time Commitment:

• A minimum commitment of 4 hours per week, typically MW or TTh
• Scheduling options are available to accommodate your availability; Schedules vary per school site
• The tutoring runs from mid-September until April or May (also varies per school)
• 35 sessions of tutoring are promised to each student

Training and Support: No experience needed. We provide comprehensive training to ensure you are prepared for your role. You will have access to resources, ongoing support, and the opportunity to collaborate with other volunteers and staff.
