Defence Minister, at the certification ceremony of the Spanish Air Force Detachment

Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, participated on Tuesday, August 6th, in the 57th "Captain Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino" Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, at the certification ceremony of the Spanish Air Force Detachment deployed to our country to conduct joint enhanced Air Policing Missions with the Romanian Air Force.

In the speech delivered on this occasion, Minister Tîlvăr appreciated the participation of the Spanish soldiers in the missions conducted in Romania as a proof of cohesion and allied solidarity, which demonstrates "the collective determination of the of the North Atlantic Alliance members to strengthen NATO's reaction and deterrence capacity at the Black Sea ".

"We must be flexible to the changes in the security situation the Alliance is facing and we must send a strong and unambiguous message to the public: we work together under the umbrella of the greatest defence alliance to safeguard the airspace of NATO's South-Eastern flank, a region with complex security architecture, especially after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, in February 2022. We remain vigilant and united to respond to the new security challenges", the Minister of National Defence stated. In conclusion, Minister Tîlvăr wished success to the military personnel "in the execution of their future missions, while safeguarding the security of the North Atlantic Alliance airspace".

The ceremony was also attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, representatives of the Spanish Embassy to Romania, the NATO Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) Torrejon and the Spanish Air Force, as well as the Romanian Chief of Air Force Staff.

The Spanish detachment consists of approximately 150 soldiers (pilots and technical personnel) and eight F-18 Hornet aircraft. Over the next four months, the Spanish soldiers will conduct NATO-led enhanced Air Policing Missions alongside the Romanian Air Force soldiers.

The joint enhanced Air Policing Missions contribute to the development of reaction and deterrence capacity, as well as to the increase of interoperability between the Romanian and Spanish Air Forces.
