New Brunswick Celebrates Senior Wellness

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (July 31, 2024) - Hundreds of seniors visited the New Brunswick Senior Citizen Resource Center on Wednesday July 24 for the Senior Self-Care Fair. The event brought together community organizations and healthcare providers to offer vital information on maintaining good health.

From nutrition and exercise to chronic disease management, attendees learned about topics critical to their well-being. Representatives from the Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services and New Brunswick Tomorrow's Live Well-Vivir Bien were among those to provide resources and support.

Mayor Jim Cahill emphasized the importance of preventive care, urging seniors to prioritize their health. "You've spent a lifetime taking care of other people," he told the crowd. "And you know the best way that you can take care of other people is to take care of yourself."

Mayor Cahill encouraged attendees to schedule regular check-ups and take advantage of available screenings.

The fair underscores how health is important, and to get seniors thinking about ways they can be "intentional" about taking care of themselves, said Melanie Ford, director of social services at the center.

The Senior Center is open to all independent New Brunswick residents 60 years of age or older. Proof of residency is required. There is no fee to join and no membership dues.

If you're interested in becoming a member, contact the Senior Resource Center office at (732) 745-5100 weekdays between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Potential members must meet in-person with the Resource Center's Social Worker.
