18 November 2024

Professor Artur Jaworski has been appointed the Head of the new School of Engineering and Design and will join London South Bank University (LSBU) in February 2025.

Professor Jaworski joins LSBU from the University of Huddersfield where he held several leadership roles including the Head of Department of Engineering and Technology between 2019-2023 and Director of Graduate Education.

Professor Jaworski has had a long career in the UK higher education sector including his PhD from Imperial College London in 1996, followed by research and teaching appointments at the University of Manchester. Since 2011, he has held a string of professorial posts including Chair in Engineering and Head of the Thermofluids Research Group at the University of Leicester, Chair in Energy Technology and Environment at the University of Leeds and his most recent Chair in Mechanical Engineering at Huddersfield. His continued work in higher education includes a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cagliari in Italy. Professor Jaworski has also held two prestigious fellowships in the field of Thermoacoustic Technologies and co-authored over 170 publications.

The School of Engineering and Design is one of four Schools within the College of Technology and Environment. As Head, Professor Jaworski will oversee programmes in Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Chemical and Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Rail systems engineering and Engineering Product Design as well as lead a community of 2,500+ students. He will work closely with the new schools to create and develop an outstanding student experience and maintain key industry partnerships to enhance LSBU research.

Professor Artur Jaworski said: "I look forward to joining LSBU early next year. I am very impressed with its ethos of inclusivity in student education, research and industrial engagement. I look forward to building upon existing strengths of the School in all of these areas, while putting at the centre the positive contributions from all parts of the School's diverse community."

Professor Chris Harty, incoming Executive Dean of the College of Technology and Environment, said: "We are all looking forward to working with Artur. He will be instrumental in growing our research and building an interdisciplinary academic hub that equips our students with the advanced skills they need for successful careers in the UK and around the world to tackle global challenges."

We are delighted that Professor Jaworski will be joining LSBU. This is the latest in our series of new talent recruitment as part of our new Schools/College structure which comes into effect in January 2025. This involves combining ten schools of study into three Colleges, each with three or four Schools within them. This will facilitate enhanced strategic leadership across related subject areas and promote collaboration between teaching and research.
