Florida’s Public Universities Soar in National Rankings

Tallahassee, FL (August 30, 2024) - Today, the State University System of Florida celebrated the outstanding performance of its institutions in national rankings by Forbes and the Washington Monthly. This continued national recognition reflects the System's commitment to academic excellence, student success and community service.

Forbes' List of America's Top Colleges, Public

Eleven of the State University System of Florida institutions were included on this year's Forbes' List of America's Top Colleges for public universities with the University of Florida reaching the top five. In addition, eight institutions improved their rankings from the previous year and Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University earned a spot on the list for the first time.

• University of Florida - ranked 4^th, up 3 spots
• Florida State University - ranked 21^st, up 1 spot
• University of South Florida - ranked 41^st, up 22 spots
• University of Central Florida - ranked 43^rd, up 7 spots
• Florida International University - ranked 60^th, up 28 spots
• Florida Atlantic University - ranked 84^th, up 8 spots
• Florida Gulf Coast University - ranked 113^th, up 55 spots
• University of West Florida - ranked 151^st, up 46 spots
• University of North Florida - ranked 155^th
• New College of Florida - ranked 164^th
• Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - ranked 187^th, first time on list

To select and rank the top 500 universities, Forbes uses 14 metrics, including whether institutions produce highly paid graduates, reduce the amount of debt incurred by students, graduate a high percentage of students within six years and retain students while they complete their bachelor's degrees.

Washington Monthly's National University Rankings

Eight of the State University System of Florida institutions were included in this year's National University Rankings by Washington Monthly. Florida International University was ranked in the top 20 overall and in the top 5 for social mobility.

Washington Monthly's rankings highlight higher education institutions that help students from low-income families improve their socio-economic status and support their communities and country. The rankings are based on social mobility, research and public service.
