Intertwined agricultural and food security strategies go to Tynwald

Complementary strategies outlining a comprehensive vision to build a resilient, innovative, and sustainable agri-food sector in the Isle of Man will go to Tynwald this week.

Together, the Agricultural Strategy 2024 and the Food Security Plan 2024 aim to strengthen the Island's food systems and support its farming community.

The plans are designed to support and grow the agricultural sector and increase food security for the Island over the next decade. Both outline the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture's long-term vision for these important areas.

The Agricultural Strategy 2024 positions the farming industry as a cornerstone of the Manx economy, community, and environment. The document promotes innovation, climate-smart practices, and the financial stability of key infrastructure such as the abattoir, creamery, and flour mill.

The strategy also underscores the importance of local food production in achieving economic resilience and environmental sustainability.

Complementing this, the Food Security Plan 2024 addresses the growing challenges of global food supply chains, climate change, and geopolitical uncertainties. It focuses on ensuring that the Island's residents have access to nutritious, locally produced food.

The plan includes targets to reduce food imports, minimise waste, enhance local food infrastructure and increase on-island food storage capacity.

Clare Barber MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, said:

'Both documents are vital to the Isle of Man's future.

They set a clear direction for supporting our farmers, reducing reliance on imports, and creating a robust, sustainable food system. By encouraging innovation and working in partnership with stakeholders, we can strengthen our local economy, safeguard our environment, and ensure food security for generations to come,'

Both strategies align with the Isle of Man's Government's Our Island Plan and its UNESCO Biosphere commitments, reinforcing the Island's dedication to sustainability and resilience.
