Grinnell Water Department Led Service Line Notices

The Grinnell Water Department mailed notices to residents about their water service line materials, potential lead water line hazards, and new replacement rules for lead lines based on each property's known or suspected material.

Types of notices sent

Confirmed Lead Service Line: For properties that the Water Department has confirmed to have lead service lines, residents were informed about potential health impacts of lead exposure and given steps to reduce lead in their drinking water, such as using lead-certified filters, cleaning aerators, using only cold water for cooking or drinking, and running the tap to flush pipes. The Water Department is actively working with state and federal resources to assist in the replacement of these lines.
Unknown Material Service Line: For properties with unverified service line materials, residents were informed on potential risks if their service lines contain lead. Residents with unverified service line materials are encouraged to complete the water service line material survey or contact the Water Department for assistance in identifying and reporting their service line material.
Galvanized Service Line: Properties with galvanized lines that may have previously been connected to lead lines were notified of potential lead absorption and release into drinking water. These residents received guidance on minimizing exposure to lead and were offered resources on testing and pipe replacement.

No Immediate Action Required

This announcement does not require any immediate action from residents concerning their water lines. The nationwide initiative to address and replace lead service lines has a replacement timeline of 10 years, which the City of Grinnell is working to meet. This timeline reflects a broader, national effort to improve water infrastructure and reduce lead exposure across the country, not just within Grinnell.

Repairs to lead service lines are no longer allowed; lines must be fully replaced as needed. The Water Department is working on solutions to help with these replacements, and is advocating for policies to support residents in addressing lead concerns.
