DNC Statement on Stonewall Remembrance Day Arrow

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, DNC Secretary Jason Rae, and DNC LGBTQ+ Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes released the following statement to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising:

"On June 28, 1969, members of the LGBTQ+ community made history by standing up and fighting back - demanding their rights at the Stonewall Inn. Joined by friends, neighbors, and allies, the bravery of these individuals sparked the ongoing LGBTQ+ rights movement. It exemplified their persistence in fighting for a nation where everyone can be their most authentic selves, where every American is treated equally under the law, and where no community is faced with discrimination or violence simply for being who they are.

"While it's important to celebrate the progress the LGBTQ+ community has made since those storied days at the Stonewall Inn, we must remember that there is still more work to be done to ensure all Americans are treated with the dignity they deserve, regardless of the pronouns they use or who they love or who they are.

"President Biden and Democrats nationwide have stood beside LGBTQ+ leaders and activists in their continued battle for equality. As the most pro-LGBTQ+ president in history, Joe Biden passed the landmark Respect for Marriage Act - codifying protections for same-sex marriage into federal law, and has committed the federal government to rooting out discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community and their families. The Biden-Harris administration has battled in the courtroom for LGBTQ+ freedoms and defended young people from rampant attacks on their right to gender-affirming care.

"Despite his desperate attempts to court LGBTQ+ voters, Donald Trump has a record of attacking LGBTQ+ rights and is plotting to roll back President Biden's progress if elected this November. While in office, Trump banned transgender people from serving in the U.S. military and strongly opposed the Equality Act. He emboldened extreme Republican governors and state legislatures to attack the LGBTQ+ community, strip away freedoms, and create an atmosphere of fear and ostracization.

"With another four years in office, President Biden and Vice President Harris will continue implementing policies that uplift and promote equity for all Americans. This November, we must reelect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to ensure all Americans can proudly and openly be who they are and love who they love."
