EU-Philippines Earth Observation Programme at the Philippine Space Week

The European Union's Copernicus support programme for the Philippines, or CopPhil, will host a booth at the Philippine Space Week at Gateway Mall in Araneta City from 9 to 14 August.

CopPhil is supporting the Philippine Space Agency and the Department of Science and Technology to develop a mirror site of the EU's Copernicus earth observation programme. First of its kind in Asia, the mirror site will receive and store images and weather data from the Copernicus satellite system-the Sentinels-in real time.

Filipino authorities will use these data to analyse environmental trends, or to better prepare for extreme weather phenomena. Copernicus' satellite images have already helped the Filipino authorities to monitor natural hazards and react to accidents, most recently in the response to Typhoon Carina or the oil spill in Manila Bay. Examples of the earth applications can be visited during the Philippine Space Week.

The European Space Agency is implementing CopPhil on behalf of the European Union with a total EU contribution of EUR 10 million (PHP 603 million).

Background

From 8 to 14 August, and under the slogan #Yamang Kalawakan ay Likas sa Ating Bangong Pilipinas, the second annual Philippine Space Week will showcase how space technology and capabilities can contribute to improve the country's resilience, generate growth and benefit citizens.

Copernicus is the European Union's Earth observation programme, looking at our planet and its environment to benefit all citizens. It offers information services that draw from satellite and in situ Earth Observation data. Copernicus Services deliver near-real-time data on a global level which can also be used for local and regional needs, to help us better understand our planet and sustainably manage the environment we live in. Images and graphs from Copernicus' #Sentinel satellites, allow public authorities to better prepare for natural disasters, variations in climate, and environmental changes-like forest cover and ground movement.

Copernicus data also support countries worldwide in their efforts to comply with the targets set in the Paris Agreement's Nationally Determined Contributions. For more information, visit https://www.copernicus.eu/en.

CopPhil is a flagship programme of the EU Global Gateway Strategy. Global Gateway aims to engage with partners globally around shared priorities such as the transition to a green economy, renewable energy and green hydrogen, education and research, or digital infrastructure.
