Old Bayview Cemetery Awakens with the ‘Voices of South Texas’ on November 2

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Step back in time to explore the rich early history of Corpus Christi and discover the notable figures of South Texas at the 15th annual "Voices of South Texas - Old Bayview Cemetery Comes Alive!"

This free, all-ages event will take place on Saturday, November 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Old Bayview Cemetery, 1202 Ramirez Street.

Join us for self-guided tours, live folk music, and a Civil War cannon demonstration. Alongside storytelling and re-enactments, visitors can learn more about the individuals buried at the cemetery by reading the placards staked by the tombstones.

HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT OLD BAYVIEW CEMETERY:

  • First U.S. military cemetery in Texas, founded in 1845 by Colonel E.U. Hitchcock on the eve of the U.S.-Mexican War
  • Over 600 individuals are buried at the Old Bayview Cemetery
  • Adjacent to the campsite of General Zachary Taylor's Army of Occupation in 1845
  • Veterans from the War of 1812 through the Spanish-American War were laid to rest here
  • Inducted on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service on October 21, 2020

This year, the "Voices of South Texas" is hosted by the Friends of Old Bayview Cemetery, the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department, and the Corpus Christi Public Libraries.
