Valencia sponsors 2024 Next Gen student resolution

CHICAGO -City Clerk Anna Valencia passed a resolution developed by students that participated in the Office of the City Clerk and Chicago Public Schools Social Science Department's Next Gen civic engagement program at this week's City Council meeting.

"It's a proud moment for me each time we pass a Next Gen resolution," Valencia said. "Having the privilege of bringing ideas from our city's young people before the City Council is a huge honor."

The resolution was brought forth by the 2024 Next Gen Education Committee during the program's mock city council exercise and celebrates the work done by the six participating high schools: Amundsen High School, Benito Juarez Community Academy, Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy High School, Lake View High School, Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School and Social Justice High School.

"We are incredibly grateful for each and every student and teacher who participates in NextGen," Director of CPS' Social Science Department Yamali Rodriguez-Gruger said. "As a district, we are committed to continue investing in civic learning that empowers our youth to directly impact city government."

Students highlighted the importance of their voices in meeting lunch program requirements and promoting healthy eating in schools.

Next Gen focuses on encouraging young Chicagoans to become interested in local government by exposing them to the legislative process and exposing them to the different ways to participate in creating change.
