JUNEAU, AK - Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) Dr. Deena Bishop announced that Ticasuk Brown Elementary School in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has been named a National ESEA Distinguished School.
The National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program is a project of the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators that publicly recognizes schools for their positive educational services. It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students.
Ticasuk Brown Elementary School was recognized for outstanding performance in Category 1: Exceptional student performance for two consecutive years.
Ticasuk Brown Elementary School has been a Title I school since 2022. The school's Title I program has enabled the school to significantly enhance their educational offerings. By strategically allocating Title I funds, they have expanded support staff, hired an Instructional Coach, invested in evidence-based Science of Reading interventions, organized family engagement opportunities to strengthen school-home connections, provided teachers with opportunities to attend professional development, and purchased technology to facilitate individual interventions.
Ticasuk Brown Elementary School's data driven approach to literacy instruction centers on the Science of Reading. Teachers strategically employ data to design a targeted Walk to Read block while differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students at each skill level.
Ticasuk Brown Elementary School is a designated 2024-2027 Purple Star School which recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation's military.
"Ticasuk Brown Elementary has shown an exceptional dedication to its students, and through this thoughtful commitment has earned this distinguished award. Congratulations, Ticasuk Brown!" said Commissioner Dr. Deena Bishop.
