Ceremony to Observe 9/11 Anniversary

Mayor Indya Kincannon and other City leaders will observe the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks by laying a wreath at the 9/11 Memorial on the lawn of the City County Building, 400 Main St. The ceremony on Monday, Sept. 11, 2024, will begin at 8:40 a.m.

At 8:46 a.m., there will be a moment of silence, and then First Baptist Church will ring its bells to mark the time hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Mayor Kincannon, Chief Noel, Chief Sharp, and a Knox County representative will present a wreath and flowers at the base of the 9/11 monument, a black granite obelisk created by Randy Vaden and installed in 2003.

KPD Chaplain Pam Neal will lead the ceremony, and KFD Chaplain Paul Trumpore will lead the benediction.

The S.O.U.L.S. Youth Choir will perform "You'll Never Walk Alone," and bagpiper Kelly Anne Shipe will perform "Amazing Grace." Philip Troutman will perform "Taps."

Main Street will be closed to traffic between Walnut and Gay streets starting at 8 a.m. All traffic should resume no later than 9:15 a.m.

Due to construction at the Sunsphere, this year's National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's Memorial Stair Climb will take place at 8 a.m. on Oct. 6 at the First Horizon Building downtown.
