Press Release
Des Moines, Iowa- Friday, December 13, 2024 - The City's Public Works Department is preparing for freezing rain and snow Friday afternoon into Saturday following a Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service.
The Street Maintenance Division is ready to address deteriorating road conditions with deicing materials - including brine and road salt - but residents and travelers are advised to avoid travel if possible.
"We've had a couple of light snowfall events this season, but this latest forecast has the potential to create a more hazardous situation for drivers," Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. "While our crews are ready to tackle these situations, we always want to stress the importance of taking it slow in winter weather."
City snowplows will be monitoring Snow Routes as needed and will be ready to begin snow and ice removal as soon as winter weather arrives. Drivers are advised to give these vehicles plenty of space on the roads, while also giving themselves extra time to stop and make safe turns.
Des Moines visitors and residents can track snow and ice removal efforts and stay updated with parking restrictions at DMSnow.org or by following Public Works on Facebook and Twitter. Residents may also opt in to receive text alerts by texting the word "SNOW" to 515-355-8815.
If there are any questions about City snow removal, residents are encouraged to call the 24/7 Public Works Customer Service Center at 515-283-4950.
