MoVal Hits an Affordable Housing High-Note with the Courtyards at Cottonwood Phase II

The City of Moreno Valley celebrated the completion of Courtyards at Cottonwood Phase II with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 19, marking another notable achievement in the City's ongoing commitment to providing inclusive housing for lower-income families. This phase of the project added 32 additional units to the innovative community, bringing much-needed affordable housing to the region.

"The completion of Courtyards at Cottonwood Phase II is a testament to the City's dedication to addressing the need for affordable housing with innovative and sustainable solutions," said Mayor Ulises Cabrera. "This project provides homes for families in need and strengthens our community by offering amenities that enhance the quality of life for our residents."

Courtyards at Cottonwood, nestled in the northeastern corner at the intersection of Indian Street and Cottonwood Avenue, was developed through a public-private partnership between the City of Moreno Valley, the County of Riverside, Rancho Belago Developers, Inc., and Kingdom Development. The expansion features a total of 32 new units (16 two-bedroom units, 12 three-bedroom units, and 4 four-bedroom units), designed to accommodate families of various sizes.

"The Courtyards at Cottonwood is a shining example of what can be achieved when public and private entities work together towards a common goal," remarked District 1 Councilmember Elena Baca-Santa Cruz. "This development provides not just housing, but a home-a place where families can thrive and grow in a supportive environment."

Phase II residents will enjoy the same comprehensive amenities available in Phase I, including access to a community room, swimming pool, passive courtyard areas with benches and barbecues, an exercise course, and a community park featuring a basketball court. These facilities were designed to foster a sense of community and well-being among residents.

The Courtyards at Cottonwood has garnered regional attention for its innovative approach to affordable housing. Earlier this year, the project was awarded the 2024 Sustainability Award by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) for its use of energy-efficient materials and appliances, which help reduce utility costs for residents.

With the completion of Phase II, Courtyards at Cottonwood now comprises a total of 112 units, including 92 family units and a 20-unit building dedicated to seniors. The community continues to serve as a model for sustainable and inclusive housing in Southern California, exemplifying the City's proactive approach to addressing the housing needs of its residents.

The Courtyards at Cottonwood is located at 24580 Cottonwood Avenue. For additional details, visit moval.org.
