Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Interstate 10 Leads to Arrest of Impaired Driver

Published: 07-28-2024 | Category: Troop D

Sulphur - On July 27, 2024, around 9:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a single-vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 10, just east of Fabacher Road. The crash claimed the life of 31-year-old Daniel Courville of Lake Charles.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Courville was attempting to cross I-10 West after his vehicle had entered the median. At the same time, 45-year-old Juan Camacho of Texas was traveling west on I-10 in a 2004 GMC Sierra. For reasons still under investigation, the GMC struck Courville as he crossed the roadway.

Courville suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Camacho was uninjured during the crash.

Troopers determined Camacho to be impaired and placed him under arrest for DWI 1st offense. A standard toxicology sample was collected from both Camacho and Courville for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Practicing pedestrian safety can help minimize crashes. Walking against the flow of traffic allows you to better see and react to approaching vehicles. When walking at night, wear bright or reflective clothing to be more visible to drivers. Additionally, alcohol and drugs impair vision, coordination, and reaction times while driving. It's crucial to plan a safe ride home before using these substances to avoid dangerous driving. Remember, if you feel different, you will drive differently. Making responsible choices on the road helps ensure everyone's safety.

Troop D has investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 11 fatalities in 2024.
