Nationwide Children's Hospital Names Jason Newland, MD, MEd, Chief of Infectious Diseases

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Nationwide Children's Hospital welcomes Jason Newland, MD, MEd, as the division chief of Infectious Diseases and an associate investigator in the Center for Child Health Equity and Outcomes Research in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's. Dr. Newland is also a tenured professor at The Ohio State University and will hold the Cramblett Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Newland is an infectious diseases specialist with extensive experience in professional care and education. His research interests are focused on the establishment and impacts of antimicrobial stewardship programs in children's hospitals, helping to create guidelines for antibiotic use to treat infections appropriately while minimizing antibiotic-related complications as well as antimicrobial resistance. In 2013, Dr. Newland co-founded the Sharing Antimicrobial Reports for Pediatric Stewardship (SHARPS) Collaborative, a national collaboration of over 60 children's hospitals dedicated to the appropriate use of antibiotics for children. He also co-directed the Antimicrobial Stewardship Council through BJC Healthcare from 2017 to 2023 and was the antimicrobial stewardship program director at St. Louis Children's Hospital from 2016-2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Newland led efforts to evaluate the rate of transmission in school in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most recently, he has been appointed the vice-chair of the US Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria.

"Dr. Newland's passion for antimicrobial stewardship in children has resulted in collaborative national and international research, improved care strategies and better outcomes. He is recognized as a national leader and expert in pediatric infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship," said Catherine Krawczeski, MD, physician-in-chief at Nationwide Children's Hospital and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University. "We are absolutely thrilled to have him join our team."

Dr. Newland joins Nationwide Children's from St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University, where he held the Schnuck Family Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts and is active in multiple professional societies and organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. His current research includes leading a multicenter AHRQ R01-funded study on the best strategies to eliminate unnecessary postoperative antibiotics.

"Dr. Newland's academic and clinical expertise in infectious diseases, and specifically antimicrobial stewardship, will support our ongoing strategic goal of integrating clinical care and research to provide best outcomes for all children," said Dennis Durbin, MD, MSCE, president, Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI) at Nationwide Children's.
