Where to go in Nashville for music — according to one of the city’s most complimented drivers

Dom Sears had many reasons for moving to Nashville back in 2020, but perhaps the most important one was the city's remarkable music scene. "Music's a big thing for me, and music is definitely a part of Nashville's soul," says the Texas native and amateur singer-songwriter.

Once he arrived, he started driving with Lyft to make a little extra money. But Lyft also turned out to be a great way to connect to local musicians and new music. "I've met quite a few up-and-coming artists," says Sears. "Dylan Marlowe - he was a passenger. I love his music."

Sears, a five-star driver, introduces riders to great new music too. Indeed, he makes a point of putting on music for every ride: "When we had people in town for the Country Music Awards and CMA Fest, I was playing country music quite a bit. But for the most part, I kind of feel out the vibes and play according to what people are feeling."

Since most folks who visit Nashville are there for the music, too, Sears often ends up steering them to particular neighborhoods and venues. "You can go into any bar in Nashville and there's going to be live music playing. And 90% of these people could be signed or on tour right now." Broadway may be the go-to strip for music and entertainment, but Sears has a list of less-traveled destinations for riders seeking a local experience.

Sears's recs for local spots to experience Nashville's live music scene

The Basement East, East Nashville

"East Nashville has a lot of smaller bars where you're able to actually connect with the artists and feel like you're a part of what they're performing. For something different, The Basement East is unlike any other venue I've been to in Nashville. You'll hear a mixture of genres (not just country), and they have really cool wall art inside."

The Bluebird Cafe, Green Hills

"Not only is The Bluebird Cafe a Nashville staple, but it's a very unique experience. You can hear up-and-coming artists as well as established artists who pop in and out, depending on the occasion." (Fun fact: When Taylor Swift played in Nashville for the Eras tour, The Bluebird Cafe - where she first performed at just 14 years of age - saw a 355% increase in rides.)

The Listening Room Cafe & 3rd and Lindsley, SoBro

"The Listening Room Cafe is similar to The Bluebird Cafe - you get to listen to artists' stories behind the music they perform, all while being served drinks and food. 3rd and Lindsley is really cool, too." This fall, 3rd and Lindsley teamed up with The Bluebird Cafe for a special series of live music. Lyft riders can get a discount on rides to/from the last three concerts! Details below.
