5 November 2024

EGAT joined the 10th IEEE International Smart Cities Conference and showcased energy innovations and technologies aiming to advance the cooperation network for smart city development as well as develop the community sustainably.

On October 30, 2024, Mr. Warit Rattanachuen, Assistant Governor - Research, Innovation and Business Development of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), along with the EGAT delegation, joined the opening ceremony of the 10th IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (IEEE ISC2-2024). This event, held for the first time in Thailand and ASEAN by IEEE Power & Energy Society - Thailand under the concept of "Smart Cities: Revolution for Mankind," facilitated knowledge and experience exchange on smart city development between experts from leading organizations through seminars and special lectures as well as exhibitions showcasing interesting innovations and technologies during October 30 - November 1, 2024 at Royal Cliff Grand Hotel Pattaya, Chonburi Province.

Mr. Warit Rattanachuen, EGAT Assistant Governor - Research, Innovation and Business Development delivered a keynote speech during the opening ceremony, stating that EGAT has plans to develop the city under the smart city concept by applying modern innovations and technologies that address the real demands of the local residents. Some highlight projects include the Mae Moh Smart City Project in Lampang Province which is preparing for the shutdown of Mae Moh Mine in the future to become a low-carbon economic city under the BCG Economy Model, and the Mae Hong Son Smart Grid Pilot Project in Mae Hong Son Province which is a model of the implementation of smart grid for power system management, transforming Mae Hong Son into a model green city that has energy security.

During the event, Mr. Suchart Tunkaew, EGAT Assistant Governor - Mae Moh Mine, participated in the seminar "Sustainable Innovation for People-Centric Smart City," sharing that EGAT has plans to transition from fossil fuel to clean energy in the future, specifically the plan to shutdown Mae Moh Power Plant in 2042 which will affect the employment in the area. Therefore, EGAT introduced the Mae Moh Smart City Project, focusing on the development of three aspects, namely 1) Smart Environment: developing air quality monitoring, agricultural waste management, and City Data Platform to support decision-making and management of resources, 2) Smart Energy: generating power from renewable energy, such as solar power and biomass, and promoting the use of electric vehicles, and 3) Smart Economy: supporting local economy by training residents in vertical farming and organic agriculture. As for the long-term plan, EGAT prioritizes projects that create exponential growth and innovations (S-Curve Projects), such as developing 100% renewable energy (RE100) and creating a green industrial park.
