City resolution advances PSU performing arts project

Portland City Council will consider a resolution next week that would advance an ambitious plan to develop Broadway-capable theaters on both ends of the Halprin Sequence adding to Portland's entertainment district and bringing new energy to downtown Portland.

Under direction of City Council and the Mayor's office after the August 14 City Council meeting, PSU has been engaged in collaborative discussions with the Halprin Landscape Conservancy, city staff, Metro and local arts organizations. The resulting recommendation will call on the city to pursue a strategy to develop two Broadway-capable venues, allowing for continuous operations and preventing a prolonged closure of performing arts programming by building first on the site on Southwest Lincoln Street provided by PSU.

In response to the resolution, Portland State University released the following statement:

"Portland State University believes this is the development that Portland needs to enhance the livability, vibrancy, and arts and educational excellence that our region deserves. PSU will always take a seat at the table for critical conversations about the city we serve. And we will always make every effort to ensure a bright future for our students and our community."
