Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson Expresses Disappointment Over Governor’s Veto of AB 637

SACRAMENTO- Assemblymember Dr. Corey A. Jackson (D-Moreno Valley) is disappointed by Governor Gavin Newsom's veto of Assembly Bill 637, a critical piece of legislation aimed at providing fleet owners and companies with the necessary tools to meet California's climate goals.

AB 637 was designed to create flexibility for companies and fleet owners as they transition toward the state's ambitious emissions reduction targets. The bill sought to ensure that businesses have the support and options needed to meet these targets without unnecessary financial or operational strain. Despite widespread support from stakeholders, the Governor chose to veto the bill, sending a concerning message about the state's commitment to achieving its climate goals.

"I am disappointed that AB 637 was vetoed. If we are serious about tackling climate change, we must also be serious about equipping those responsible for transitioning our fleet and transportation systems with the right tools," said Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson. "By vetoing this bill, we are telling fleet owners and companies that we are not willing to provide them the flexibility they need to meet these goals. This decision will make it harder for California to meet its climate commitments."

Assemblymember Jackson emphasizes that a one-size-fits-all approach to climate policy is not realistic. AB 637 would have provided a tailored solution that considered the unique challenges faced by different fleet operators, allowing them to transition in a way that aligns with California's environmental objectives while also maintaining their operations.

"The veto of AB 637 shows that there is still much work to be done. Climate action requires innovation and flexibility, not rigid mandates. We must work together to ensure that our policies reflect both our environmental goals and the realities faced by those implementing them."
