SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - The Bonnie and Bill Stubblefield Institute for Civil Political Communications launched its Year of Civility initiative - in collaboration with Shepherd University - on September 5 during a public forum with United States Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin at the Frank Arts Center Theater.

MetroNews Talkline host Hoppy Kercheval, known as "The Voice of West Virginia," moderated the conversation that is part of the ongoing American Conversation Series at the Stubblefield Institute.

The public forum, "Beyond Pepperoni Rolls: Who Are We As West Virginians?," explored what it means to be a West Virginian. From analyzing outsider perspectives and stereotypes to considering the greatest strengths of the state and its residents, Senators Capito and Manchin shared a dialogue about West Virginia's identity and community.

This was the first major public event of the Year of Civility initiative, which aims to encourage civil discussions, bring together diverse ideas, and address complex issues.

Year of Civility events will be held on Shepherd's campus throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. For more information about the Year of Civility and to learn about its upcoming events, visit the Year of Civility's webpage.
