The Conversation: Seafloor Sediment Reveals Previously Unknown Volcanic Eruption 520,000 Years Ago in South Aegean Sea

In the winter of 2022, Associate Professor of Petrology and Planetary Geoscience Molly McCanta spent two months cruising the south Aegean Sea on board the International Ocean Discovery Program's JOIDES Resolution as part of International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 398.

McCanta, who studies the chemistry of volcanic rock, joined her geologist colleagues to use this former oil exploration ship to drill deep into the seafloor and reveal a massive and previously unknown volcanic eruption off the coast of Santorini, Greece. Read about their findings at The Conversation.
