SIU School of Music hosts guitar quartet on Nov. 17

CARBONDALE, Ill. - A professional classical guitar quartet featuring faculty from four higher education institutions in Illinois will perform at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The MAGIQ Illinois Guitar Quartet is at 3 p.m. in SIU Carbondale's Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall, 980 Faner Drive. The repertoire will include an array of contemporary and classical works. Admission is free for SIU faculty, staff and students with ID, and $10 for the general public.

The ensemble comprises Isaac Lausell, associate professor and director of jazz studies in SIU Carbondale's School of Music; Angelo Favis, professor of guitar at Illinois State University; Michael Patilla, dean of transfer, Carl Sandburg College, and Guido Sánchez-Portuguez, assistant professor of music and founder of the classical guitar program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

The program will present works of Sánchez-Portuguez, French composer Francis Kleynjans and include a fiery version of Georges Bizet's "Carmen Suite," Lausell said.

In addition to the Nov. 17 performance, the SIU Studio Jazz Orchestra will be giving a free, one-set performance from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Hangar 9, 511 S. Illinois Ave. The performance is the first time in several years the studio jazz orchestra will be performing, offering a "full-fledged big band performance blending some of the classic jazz standards with a varied repertoire, featuring funk, soul and Latin music," Lausell said.
