Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland established the country's newest national park July 17: the Blackwell School National Historic Site in Texas. The newest addition to the list of national parks came through the bipartisan Blackwell School National Historic Site Act signed by President Joe Biden in October 2022.

The Blackwell School National Historic Site is located in Marfa and was built in 1909 to serve Mexican and Mexican American citizens within the city during segregation. The school ran from 1909 until 1966, according to the Blackwell School Alliance.

"Today's designation of the Blackwell School as our nation's newest national park ensures that the rich history and cultural heritage of this significant place is preserved for future generations," Haaland said in a press release from the National Park Service. "This site is a powerful reminder of our nation's diverse and often complex journey toward equality and justice. By honoring the legacy of Blackwell School, we recognize the resilience and contributions of the Latino community in our shared history."

The site includes the original 1909 schoolhouse and a building known as Band Hall, which was built in 1927. Both buildings contain photographs, memorabilia, and historical quotes and stories from students and teachers.

If you would like to plan a visit, the National Park Service website provides information, directions, and a calendar of events. Currently, the site has very limited services and is open every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. There is no entrance fee or pass required.
