5 5 5 5: FDNY Supervising Fire Marshal George E. Snyder Jr.'s Line of Duty Death Funeral

August 19, 2024

The FDNY celebrated the life of Supervising Fire Marshal George E. Snyder Jr. at a Line of Duty Death funeral on Monday, August 19, 2024, at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan.

SFM Snyder, 53, of Yonkers, suffered a cardiac episode after working on Friday, August 9. He died on Saturday, August 10.

"When he became a supervising fire marshal, George brought years of street smarts, of experience and expertise to a role that requires all of that-and then some. He did his job with a smile on his face, always ready with a joke and a jab and a willingness to do what it takes to get the job done," Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. "It is the greatness of the FDNY that attracts members like George-dedicated to service and keeping our city safe. It is now time for our Department to blanket his family in the honor and compassion he showed us every day when he came to work."

Mayor Eric Adams, in his remarks, delivered a message to SFM Snyder's family: "He served in the greatest fire department in the history of this country. You gave us your only son, and you allowed him to go serve and protect. I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

SFM Snyder began his career with the FDNY in May 2002, first assigned to Engine 36 in Harlem. He was assigned to the BFI Special Operations Command, where he led the Lithium-Ion Battery Task Force. He was cited five times for meritorious acts throughout his 22-year career.
