Public Works' Week in Review for September 26, 2024

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

2024 Discharge Monitoring Report-Quality Assurance (DMR-QA) Study 44

The wastewater department recently completed the 2024 Discharge Monitoring Report-Quality Assurance (DMR-QA) Study 44. The Environmental Protection Agency requires all Clean Water Act-National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit holders complete the study. The study ensures the integrity of laboratory data submitted by the permittee for DMR reporting requirements. The wastewater department worked diligently with its many licensed operators and contracted third-party laboratories to complete the DMR-QA Study. We are pleased to report that our testing parameters have a 100% pass rate for DMR-QA Study 44. A 100% pass rate helps our department maintain the utmost quality in discharging effluent to the environment.

Successful Household Hazardous Waste Event at Hometown Heroes

League City's Household Hazardous Waste event (HHW) that was held this past Saturday, September 14, 2024, was a big success! The event which is sponsored by Ameriwaste is held twice a year at Hometown Heroes Park and has seen an increase in residents who recycle. We welcomed over 1,000 cars dropping off tires, microwaves, electronics, paints, chemicals and more for this event. Due to the increase in demand for these recycling services this event was increased to twice a year. Staff has already begun planning the next HHW event that will be held spring 2025.

Service and A/C Repair on Linkbelt Excavator

The City of League City's linkbelt excavator was due for service and was also experiencing A/C issues. Fleet performed preventative maintenance and identified the concern with the A/C. An oil change was due along with a hydraulic service and it seems the A/C problem was only that the unit was struggling to keep up with the heat we have been experiencing. The windows have been tinted and the unit was topped off with freon.

Why Do Leaves Change Colors in the Fall?

Leaf color change is due to lack of chlorophyll-the green pigment found in leaves that carries out photosynthesis (the process of the tree using sunlight to produce its food, which is sugar). As temperatures recede and the sun is less intense, the chlorophyll level in the leaves drops, and the leaves reveal their yellow, orange, and red pigments beneath.
