City Launches Official Site for Electrify Cincy

Today, the City of Cincinnati's Office of Environment and Sustainability (OES) is announcing the launch of the official website for Electrify Cincy.

As a collaborative effort that supports Cincinnatians to accelerate electrification of homes and businesses, Electrify Cincy aims to educate residents and contractors as we work towards the Green Cincinnati Plan goal of 50% carbon emissions reduction by 2030 and 20,000 electrified homes by 2028. Building electrification is the shift from powering buildings with fossil fuels like natural gas, coal, and propane to powering them with electricity to reduce costs and improve our environment.

According to Molly Robertshaw, Sustainability Manager at OES, "Electrifying buildings gives us the best opportunity for each and every person to do their part to fight climate change as our electricity grid transitions to renewable sources. The biggest step that any one person can take is turn their efforts toward shifting the sources that power our buildings away from fossil fuels. We can take this step towards a healthier future for our planet when we commit to considering electrification."

In Cincinnati, 62% of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from buildings including our homes and businesses and 78% of GHG emissions in homes come from space heating and 18% come from water heating. The official site for Electrify Cincy serves as an educational resource to learn more about electrification at all steps of the process to combat these emissions. With support from various pilot partners and participants and funding from the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 5 Air Quality Division, electrifycincy.org is live and ready to serve the public as Cincinnati works to alleviate the effects of climate change and lessen the impact of human activities. Visit the site to learn more and remember: "when it dies, electrify!"

Special thanks to original Electrify Cincy pilot partners and participants including Corken Steel, Green Building Consulting, Groundwork Ohio River Valley, HVAC Design Partners, People Working Cooperatively, RMI, The Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati, 14 resident ambassadors, and 11 HVAC contractors.
