"California's farmers and ranchers are experiencing challenging market conditions," said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. "With downward trending prices and increased production costs, on-farm profitability is eroding. It's important to hear farm perspectives to help inform policy and programs at the federal, state and local level."

Invited speakers include: Janie Gatzman and Scott Bozzo, California Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (CALASFMRA); Dr. David Magaña, RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness; Dr. Joel Kimmelshue, Land IQ; Steve Arnold, California Cattlemen's Association; Catherine Van Dyke, California Association of Family Farmers; Jeff Bitter; Allied Grape Growers; Geoffrey Vanden Heuvel, Milk Producers Council; Shannon Douglass, California Farm Bureau Federation, and Neill Callis, Western Growers/Turlock Fruit Company.

"As farmers we are accustomed to market and price swings, but for some crops we are experiencing downward trends for the last 2-3 years," said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. "When this is combined with increased production costs - it's challenging, across the board for farmers, farmworkers and rural communities."

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
